Good morning, sisters and brothers;
Lately I have been doing a lot of thinking about light.
What is light?
Science describes light as electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the human eye.
Light travels at approximately 300,000 kilometres per second.
This being said, I pose the question once more.
What is light?
To me light has always been a source of mystery and magic.
I am amazed at how the quality of light changes throughout the seasons of the year. The break of dawn during winter is radically different from that of summer.
There is no doubt that light affects us.
The shorter days of winter are proven to have a negative effect on our emotional well being. There is a commercial that comes to mind where a person is sitting at a desk in an office. She looks out the window and it is pitch black outside. She turns to the clock on the wall which reads 4:25 pm. She then begins to cry.
Last night I took a walk in the wild meadow at 9:30. It was still light out. Clouds had gathered in the western horizon and crimson shafts of light shot through gaps in the clouds. As darkness silently swept over Dunblane, fireflies descended on the wild meadow.  I marvel at their luminescence. Each one a source of light. There is a forest near a town called Puebla not too far from Mexico City that is famous for its fireflies, or luciernagas. On warm summer nights millions of luciernagas light up the landscape. Last night at Dunblane paled in comparison, but it was nonetheless breathtakingly beautiful. The soft light of each firefly lent magic to the moment.  Even though the mosquitoes were feasting on me, I stood and prayed for our little reflection group. Each illuminated luciernaga was like a bead in a prayer rosary, representing a name. And high above, sister moon shone approvingly. As I walked back toward the house, it began to rain, and heat lightning lit up the clouds. Although it was now dark, I was surrounded by light.
This morning dawned bright and beautiful. The catbird was just outside our window, loudly imploring us to venture out to enjoy the gift of this new day. The sunlight was almost too bright, making all colours seem unnaturally sharp. The greens were deeper, the sky bluer than I had seen it in a long time. I walked to the wild meadow to see if I could find spiderwebs. They are beautiful in the morning light after a soft rainfall. Each miniscule water bead that clings to the webs looks like a crystal clear pearl. As I was searching, something else caught my attention. The light of the early morning sun was filtering through a leaf from the wild grape that grows in the wild meadow. It was startling. It was like a piece in a stained glass window in a cathedral. Just a small part of a mosaic that was being lit up by the light of the morning sun. Lit up by electromagnetic radiation traveling at nearly 300,000 kilometres per hour. Purely magical.
Dear sisters and brothers. If you are searching for the light because you are undergoing challenges, walking in what seems insurmountable darkness, I offer you the following verses from psalm 139, a psalm which I revisit often .
"If I say, Surely the darkness will cover me,
and the light around me turn to night,
Darkness is not dark to you;
the night is as bright as the day;
darkness and light to you are both alike."
These are uncertain times, make no mistake.
But we are a people of certainty, and we will persevere.
The light of Christ will push back the darkness
Jesus will guide us.
Let us pray
Creator of the universe, the light of your glory shines in the darkness of our lives. Make us attentive to your presence, prompt to serve you, and ever eager to follow in the steps of the one who is our true light, Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen
Go out and take on the day
Diosito me los colme de bendiciones y alegría hoy y siempre
Paz
I love you
John
